Many of you have heard a buzz over the years about Garner getting a YMCA facility. The YMCA program has been strong in our community for several years, but much has been going on behind the scenes to get a building in our town. A small group of citizens have been working hard in what was called ‘The Quiet Phase’ which included getting commitments for $5,378,000 towards the $7,000,000 needed amount for the project.
The dream actually goes back many years when in 1970 the Bell and Holding families donated 14 acres on Aversboro Road located in the heart of Garner to the YMCA. The property, adjacent to White Deer Park and across the street from Lake Benson Park, is the perfect location for the YMCA to build their permanent home in Garner.
The project is now moving into what is called the ‘Public Phase’ where the public will be getting regular updates about what’s happening, including the building’s name, which we will hopefully find out next month.
I don’t think it needs to be said that this is a big deal for Garner. The YMCA program is more than just getting another gym and community pool, but the YMCA’s mission is to, “to put Christian principles into practice through programs that build healthy spirit, mind and body for all”.
YMCA officials are hoping to have a ground breaking about this time next year. It is anticipated that 3,000 local families will join and it will provide 50 full/part-time jobs.

Plans have been submitted for converting the old car wash location at 1010 and Fayetteville Rd to the right behind McDonalds into a Urgent Care facility. It is not yet been seen if they will creatively renovate the existing structure or demolish and rebuild.
BellaRose Nursing and Rehab Center has been giving state approval for a 100-bed facility. They are now seeking zoning and site approval from Garner now. According to the NC DHSR Decision Letter for BellaRose the project is approved for a capital expenditure of $8,534,150. The 20.26 acre property is located by Benson Rd and New Bethel Church Road next to Glens at Bethel Subdivision.
